The Ohlegschlagers are not a blood line to me. However, Philip Adam Ohlegschlager adopted my father and was the only grandfather I knew from my father's family. To me the Ohlegschlagers were my aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Ella Erline Ohlegschlager (Huston)(Prince)(Cooper), 82, a resident of The Dalles, OR. died at her home Friday, Mar 2001.
She was born May 10, 1919, in The Dalles, the older of two children, to Roy Harold James and Mary Emma (Shearer) Ohlegschlager. She grew up in Shaniko and Heppner, until moving to her uncle Walts homestead(one of Great grandma Keenans properties) on Upper Mill Creek near The Dalles in 1933. During the great depression many families had to double up and make do.
Ella's father, Roy, was my dad's half brother, Ella's mother was my mothers sister,Mary Emma (Shearer). This threw four young females together. we became, like sisters, Ella being the oldest, me, then my sister, Edwina, then Joyce the youngest. She and her sister Joyce went to the Mill Creek school and on to The Dalles High school with Edwina and I.
Ella married "Bud" Houston first and had a daughter Joyce Marie White) Joyce proceeded Ella in death in 1981,(Joyce Marie was murdered in her bed by an ex husband or boyfriend.)
Ella married 2nd Sam Prince and they had a son, Samuel Prince. She later married her 3rd husband, Whitey Cooper, had n/i, lived in Idaho. When Ella and Whitey were coming from Idaho to attend my parents 50th wedding anniversary at their home on Upper Mill Creek ... an accident happened that changed Ella's life completely ... a deer jumped out in front of the car ... throwing Ella out onto the pavement where she slid on her head doing much damage to her head .... she was never the same, she retired back to her mothers and her Aunt Bertha's home at 905 Case St. The Dalles, She and Whitey were divorced in 1967. She worked as a bartender at the Liberty Club and the Legion Club for many years. She enjoyed storytelling, hunting, fishing, bingo and shuffleboard.
Survivors include her son, Samuel Prince, her aunt Bertha Spletzer, her sister Joyce, all of The Dalles along with 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several neices and nephews.

Letter from Germany to Hattie
I received some old letters from Harriet, my cousin some
years ago, letters our grandma Hattie received from her
sister in Germany (In German, except for one)

Dear Hedwig
We received your card Jan 8th and I don't want to let you wait
long for an answer. I am sorry to have to tell you the sad news,
that our dear mother is no longer alive. She died on the 20th
of May last year. She had to endure so much pain, these last two
years, she spent in bed. It was difficult for mother as well as
for me, even tho I would still be happy to take care of her. I
don't complain about her death and am happy she has the rest she
so wished for. She waited so long for news from you, but it was
seldom that a letter from The Dalles came. All though she was

LEBANON – Requium Mass for Chris A. Wetle, 79, 46 W. Vine St., who died Saturday at Lebanon Community Hospital, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with the Rev William M. Hugh officiating. Burial follows at Lebanon IOOF Cemetery. Jost Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Friends who wish may contribute in his memory to the American Cancer Society.
He was born Nopv 25, 1895 in The Dalles where he was reared and received his education. He entered the U. S. Army in 1917, serving until 1919. He returned to The Dalles and was a buyer at the A.M. Williams Department Store. He moved to Walla Walla , Wash. In 1931, where he was employed in a department store. He moved to Lebanon in 1961.
He married Mable Rae Green, June 20, 1927 in Portland. She survives.

Maud Agnes (“Daisy”) Wetle, 88, wife of John L. Wetle Sr, died early Sunday morning at the family home at 530 Trenton Ave.
She had been a Bend resident since she and her husband came here 47 years ago from The Dalles to establish Wetle’s Department Store.
She had been a school teacher prior to her marriage Sept 2, 1912, in Oregon City. A graduate of Oregon College of Education (Monmouth). She was born Dec 21, 1882, at Crookston, Minn.
She was a member of the Delphinian Society, Neighbors of Woodcraft, St. Francis Catholic Church and the church alter society.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons and a daughter, all of Bend, John L. (Jack) Wetle, Jr., Robert J. Wetle and Mrs. Wayne (Helen) Faddis.
She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Eva Mayer and Mrs. Viola Paulson, both of Portland. There are grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Requium mass will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Aloysius McKenna as celebrant. Recisitation of the rosary will be Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Tabor Funeral Home chapel.

John L. Wetle, 86, who 53 years ago founded the Bend department store that bears his name, died early this morning at his home at 530 NW Trenton Ave.
Mass of Christian burial will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. William Coughlin as celebrant.
Mr. Wetle was well known as a sportsman, particularly as an expert dry-fly fisherman. He came to Central Oregon in the early 1920s and camped on the Metolious near the present Camp Sherman area for two years before moving to Bend. He bought an existing dry goods store from Charles Warner, and established the John L. Wetle Co. in April 1923.
Mr. Wetle was a member of the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the Deschutes County Sportsman’s Association and the Isack Walton League. He was a past president of the Bend Lions Club, and in past years was active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Elks Lodge and the St. Charles Memorial Hospital board.
He was born Aug. 15, 1889, at The Dalles. He had four brothers who preceded him in death.
His survivors include two sons, John L. “Jack” Jr. and Robert J., and a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Helen) Faddis, all of Bend. There are 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Recitation of the rosary will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Niswonger-Reynolds Chapel. After the funeral Mass Saturday, burial will be at Deschutes Memorial Gardens beside the grave of his wife, Maud A., who died Feb. 7, 1971.

Mrs. Wetle, a native of Germany, had been bedfast the past six years after coming here 15 years ago from The Dalles to make her home with her son, John Wetle, 530 Trenton. Special rosary services were held last evening at the Niswonger and Winslow funeral chapel, attended by many friends who will be unable to attend the services Tuesday morning in The Dalles.
Mr. and Mrs. John Wetle and daughter, Helen, accompanies by Mrs. Leo Herbring, left Bend this morning for The Dalles to complete arrangements for the funeral, which will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday from St. Peter’s Catholic church, with Rev. R. Nooy officiating.
Besides her son and granddaughter in Bend, Mrs. Wetle is survived by the following other sons: Clem and George Wetle of Portland; Chris Wetle of Walla Walla, Wash; and Fred Wetle of The Dalles; and the following other grandchildren, Robert and John Wetle, Jr., both of Bend and now in the armed forces; Mrs. George Ritchie of Portland.

Son of Jacob Wetle and Appolonia "Lena" Ohlegschlager Wetle. He is buried next to his parents in the Catholic Cemetery at The Dalles. The tombstone gives the name "Willie".

They are almost distracted over the continued troubles which have followed their children for the past two years, but which heretofore have not resulted fatally. It is hoped that now they will have a cessation of these accidents, as they have already had more than their share.

St Peter's Catholic Cemetery - The Dalles
On January 27th I stopped at The Dalles to search the Catholic cemetery for the graves of Philip J Ohlegschlager, Elizabeth Ohlegschlager, Jacob Wetle, Lena Ohlegschlager Wetle and any other family members I could locate.
I first went to the library to check the indexes. I found the following in the listings of burials in St Peters Cemetery.
Ohlegschlager, Elizabeth - Section 3, row 24, lot 28
Ohlegschlager, Phillip – Section 3, row 24, lot 29
Wetle, Jacob – Section 3, row 25, lot 16
Wetle, Lena – Section 3, row 25, lot 17
Wetle, Willie – Section 3, row 25, lot 18
The index seems to record the information from the tombstones. A short interview with the cemetery caretaker revealed that early records were destroyed in a fire so it is unknown if other family members are buried here.
The cemetery is accessed from Cherry Street just south of Tenth. This area was part of an old patent issued to the Catholic mission. The first two catholic churches were located here. There is a flag pole near the center of the cemetery and section 3 is south west of this point. The Ohlegschlagers are 24 rows down the dirt road and about two lots to the south. The Wetle burials are in the next row and further south.
I noticed that the Ohlegschager monument had a fastening on the top that looked like something had broken off. Similar monuments that were nearby had stone crosses on the top.

Mrs. Ohlegschlager Dies -- Mrs. Hattie Elizabeth Ohlegschlager, well-known Dalles resident, died in The Dalles this morning at the age of 78. Born in Berlin, Germany, Mrs. Ohlegschlager had lived in the United States for 65 years, and in this community for 50 years. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Joan Long of Ogden, U.; Mrs. Hazel Wattles of Greshan, and Mrs. R. M. (Edna) Henderson and Mrs. Webster (Myrtle) Turner, both of The Dalles. She also leaves six sons, Harry E. Mathwig of Olympia, Wash.; Walter E., Roy and Phillip, of The Dalles, and Edwin and Sam, of Portland. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and ?? grandchildren. She was a member of the Lutheran church, the Eagles auxiliary and the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign wars. Funeral services will be held at Callaway's chapel at 2 o'clock on Monday, April 28, with Rev. J. C. Suter officiating. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Joan Long of Ogden, U.; Mrs. Hazel Wattles of Greshan, and Mrs. R. M. (Edna) Henderson and Mrs. Webster (Myrtle) Turner, both of The Dalles. She also leaves six sons, Harry E. Mathwig of Olympia, Wash.; Walter E., Roy and Phillip, of The Dalles, and Edwin and Sam, of Portland. She also leaves 15 grandchildren and ?? grandchildren. She was a member of the Lutheran church, the Eagles auxiliary and the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign wars. Funeral services will be held at Callaway's chapel at 2 o'clock on Monday, April 28, with Rev. J. C. Suter officiating. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery.

Phillip A. Ohlegschlager died last evening at a local hospital at the age of 64 years. Mr. Ohlegschlager was married 41 years ago in Portland to Miss Hattie Dohman, and they later made their home in San Francisco for five years. They came to The Dalles in 1895 and for the last 11 years, Mr. Ohlegschlager was employed by the railroad.
Funeral services wlii be held from Zell's chapel Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. W. I. Eck officiating. Mrs. Eck will be in charge of the music. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery. The deceased was a member of the Woodmen of the World of America and of the Mutual Benefit Accident society.

Fred Wetle Rites Friday - Fred Wetle, a longtime resident of The Dalles, died in a nursing home here on Wednesday.
He was born in Wasco County July 9, 1884.
Mr. Wetle was a farmer in the Chenowith district for many years and was a charter member of the Chenowith Grange. He received his 50 year membership pin in 1971.
His wife, Nettie, died in 1967. Survivors are two brothers, John in Bend and Chris in Lebanon; two nieces and three nephews including Ernest Kuck, The Dalles, a nephew of Nettie Wetle.
Funeral services will be at Spencer & Libby Funeral Home on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Entombment will be at the IOOF Memorial Mausoleum.

Clem Wetle was the son of Jacob Wetle and Appolonia (Lena) Ohlegschlager Wetle.

Clem Wetle has a harness and saddle shop at 412 ½ Morrison Street.
In his display window you will see saddles, bridles, crops, whips, curry combs and brushes and other required equipment.
“I learned my trade at The Dalles” said Mr. Wetle. “When I was a boy we handled heavy stock saddles, not light English riding saddles used today. We sold quirts and whips, not crops. We sold chaps, not riding boots.”
“Vic Mardon for 20 years ran a saddle shop at the Dalles. He shipped his hand-made heavy ornamented saddles all over the West. The largest saddle shop in the United States today is Hamley’s at Pendleton. He manufactures the finest and most expensive saddles being made today and ships them all over the United States.
“I was born in Portland October 17, 1879. In 1883 we moved to The Dalles. When I was 21 I came back to Portland. I worked for George Lawrence and later for R. W. Price at 331 Ankeny Street. I also worked for F. J. Keller at 61 North 6th Street.”
“There will always be people who love horses so we old time saddlers will stay with our trade but not many chaps are learning the trade”

ELDERLY MAN DIES OF BURNS
A 75-year-old man who fell into a tub of hot water at his home Saturday died Sunday at Emanual hospital. He suffered severe back and neck burns when he plunged beneath the tap which was turned on full hot.
The body of Clem Wetle, 4741 N.E. 18th Avenue was transferred to the Little Chapel of the Chimes for services . The accident occurred about 9 a.m. Saturday and he was admitted to Emanuel at 10:10. Death was placed about 9:40 a.m. Sunday.
He is survived by the widow, Lillie, at home.

He is survived by his wife, Emma; a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Ritchie of Portland; three brothers, Fred, of The Dalles; John of Bend, and Chris of Walla Walla, Wash., and two grandchildren.
