1880 Federal Census-Wetle & Ohlegschlager

1880 Federal Census from Fulton Pct, Multnomah Co Oregon
Household #190 is Jacob Wittle (1900 census say Wetle) and his wife Appelonia, she would be "Aunt Hoppa/Oppa".

Household #191 is Appelonia's parents Jacob and Elizabeth Ohlegschlager and their family. Missing from the Ohlegschlager household is Philip Adam and Maggie. Maggie was married in the fall of 1880 and may be listed elsewhere. At closer inspection the entry "William" matches the age and position in the family for the son Philip. (Perhaps recorded wrong or another name for Philip??)

Marriage Of Jacob Wetle And Appolenia Ohlegschlager

From Marriage records of Multnomah Co Oregon - Book 3 page 302
Jacob WATLE and Apollonia OLEGSCHLAGER, both of Multnomah Co, married 3 Oct 1878 (license 28 Sept) at the Church of the Immaculate Conception by J F Fierens Catholic Paster; witnesses, William A. Duber and Margaret Olegschlager.

NOTES: Apollonia is the daughter of the immigrants Jacob Olegschlager and Elizabeth Gould Ohlegschlager. Margaret was a younger sister of Apollonia. Later records spell Jacob's surname as Wetle or Wettle. Immigration index spells Apollonia. (One p and 2 l's)

The Ohlegschlagers Immigrate To America

Last week I searched some of the 1880 – 1920 Federal Census records. I have not been able to find Jacob and Elizabeth Ohlegschlager in 1900, this being one of the years that show the year of immigration and if the person is naturalized. However, their daughter Appolena and son Chris list their year of immigration as 1873.

Based on that information I searched the “Germans to America” indexes for that time frame and found the following:

Ship: Minister Roon
From: Bremen and Southampton
To: New York
Arrived: 15 October 1874

Oligschlaeger, Elise, age 39, female, occupation unknown, from Germany to USA
(probably truncated because of length - Elizabeth Gould),
. . . . . . . . Johann, age 16, male, occupation unknown, from Germany to USA
. . . . . . . . Appolonia, age 10, female, child, from Germany to USA
. . . . . . . . Margaretha, age 9, child, from Germany to USA
. . . . . . . . Christoph, age 8, male, child, from Germany to USA
. . . . . . . . Philipp, age 7, male, child, from Germany to USA
. . . . . . . . Jacob, age 4, male, child, from Germany to USA
. . . . . . . . Adam, age 3, male, child, from Germany to USA
. . . . . . . . Franz, age 2, male, child, from Germany to USA
. . . . . . . . Susanna, age 10 mo, child, from Germany to USA

Missing is Jacob, the father of this family. He probably immigrated earlier. Further searches may find Jacob and Elizabeth listed in the 1900 census and hopeful, we will learn his year of immigration. If he arrived at a location not on the east coast it is unlikely that he would be listed in “Germans to America” as that index mostly records those arriving on the eastern seaboard.

Ohlegschlagers In The Portland City Directories

I visited the Genealogical Forum of Oregon in Portland today in search of Winnie’s Ohlegschlager ancestors.

First I searched the Portland City Directories from before the turn of the century.

I found several listings that were a match or possibilities.

(NOTE: Published spelling preserved)
1887 Portland City Directory - page 362
Oelschlager, Jacob, teamster, Wm W Newhouse, bds n w cor Hooker and Meade.
(boarder – northwest corner Hooker and Meade)
Even though the spelling is different I believe this is the immigrant Jacob Ohlegschlager.

1890 Portland City Directory – page 400
Ohleschlager, John, teamster Moore & Star, res. 116 Hood(res = residence)

1893 Portland City Directory – page 692
Ohlegschlager, John, lab, res 186 Jefferson lab = Laborer)

Wetles in the City Directories

note: Jacob and Eliz Ohlegschlager’s daughter Appolonia married Jacob Wetle in 1878. They removed to The Dalles about 1883 so these Wetles are possibly close relatives

1893 Portland City Directory – page 916
Wetle, Jacob, lab, Bissinger & Co, res 1332 Macadam

1897 Portland City Directory – page 637
Wetle, Jacob, res near Carson Heights
Note: other Wetles – James, John G, Mary (widow of Clement), and Matthew are also listed.

These are the listings I was able to find in the directories that were available at GFO.

My Ohlegschlager Family

Phillip Jacob OHLEGSCHLAGER and his wife, Elizabeth GOULD are buried in the Catholic cemetery at The Dalles, Oregon.

I know very little about them ..... when did they arrive, how did they come ? by wagon train ? did they come up the river from Portland by boat ? When and did they come to San Francisco, by wagon or by ship ?.... some of their family lived near San Francisco ... as Grandma Hatwig said they were visiting in Oakland, Or when the S.F. earthquake hit, that they spent some days in Golden Gate Park. Dad said Grandpa Phillip and grandma moved to The Dalles by boat in 1900, the year uncle Edwin was born.

Clifford HENDERSON, Aunt Edna's son and my 1st. cousin, discovered the OHLEGSCHLAGER's came from NE Dutch county (the 1880 census says Baveria, Germany, and the Tombstone says Germany). When Grandma Hattie (Dhomann (sp))(b. in Berlin)was a girl going to school her family lived so close to the border of Holland .... she never knew just what her school day would be, Dutch or German ... as the border fluctuated back and forth.

As far as I know, there are no living male heirs to carry on the OHLEGSCHLAGER surname. I recall dad mentioning, several times ... that when his step brothers, Edwin, Phillip, and Sam died, that that would be the end of it. Uncle Edwin, born in 1900, was the last of the brothers to go and he died in 1995 or 96. Aunt Myrtle OHLEGSCHLAGER TURNER in 1997 was the sole remaining child of Grandma Hatties. And now in 2005 she to is gone.

The OHLEGSCHLAGERs are not a blood line to me, however, Philip Adam OHLEGSCHLAGER was the only grandfather I knew from my father's family. To me the OHLEGSCHLAGERS were my aunts, uncles and cousins.
