Chris Wetle

LEBANON – Requium Mass for Chris A. Wetle, 79, 46 W. Vine St., who died Saturday at Lebanon Community Hospital, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with the Rev William M. Hugh officiating. Burial follows at Lebanon IOOF Cemetery. Jost Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Friends who wish may contribute in his memory to the American Cancer Society.

He was born Nopv 25, 1895 in The Dalles where he was reared and received his education. He entered the U. S. Army in 1917, serving until 1919. He returned to The Dalles and was a buyer at the A.M. Williams Department Store. He moved to Walla Walla , Wash. In 1931, where he was employed in a department store. He moved to Lebanon in 1961.

He married Mable Rae Green, June 20, 1927 in Portland. She survives.

He was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church, American Legion Post No. 51, BPOE Lodge No 1663 and Pineway Golf Club. He was a charter member of The Dalles Lions Club.

In addition to his widow survivors include a brother, John, of Bend, two nieces and two nephews.

MRS. JOHN L. WETLE SR.

Maud Agnes (“Daisy”) Wetle, 88, wife of John L. Wetle Sr, died early Sunday morning at the family home at 530 Trenton Ave.

She had been a Bend resident since she and her husband came here 47 years ago from The Dalles to establish Wetle’s Department Store.

She had been a school teacher prior to her marriage Sept 2, 1912, in Oregon City. A graduate of Oregon College of Education (Monmouth). She was born Dec 21, 1882, at Crookston, Minn.

She was a member of the Delphinian Society, Neighbors of Woodcraft, St. Francis Catholic Church and the church alter society.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons and a daughter, all of Bend, John L. (Jack) Wetle, Jr., Robert J. Wetle and Mrs. Wayne (Helen) Faddis.

She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Eva Mayer and Mrs. Viola Paulson, both of Portland. There are grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Requium mass will be said Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Aloysius McKenna as celebrant. Recisitation of the rosary will be Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Tabor Funeral Home chapel.

Concluding services and vault interment will be at Deschutes Memorial Gardens.

JOHN L. WETLE

John L. Wetle, 86, who 53 years ago founded the Bend department store that bears his name, died early this morning at his home at 530 NW Trenton Ave.

Mass of Christian burial will be said Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. William Coughlin as celebrant.

Mr. Wetle was well known as a sportsman, particularly as an expert dry-fly fisherman. He came to Central Oregon in the early 1920s and camped on the Metolious near the present Camp Sherman area for two years before moving to Bend. He bought an existing dry goods store from Charles Warner, and established the John L. Wetle Co. in April 1923.

Mr. Wetle was a member of the Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, the Deschutes County Sportsman’s Association and the Isack Walton League. He was a past president of the Bend Lions Club, and in past years was active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Elks Lodge and the St. Charles Memorial Hospital board.

He was born Aug. 15, 1889, at The Dalles. He had four brothers who preceded him in death.

His survivors include two sons, John L. “Jack” Jr. and Robert J., and a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Helen) Faddis, all of Bend. There are 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Recitation of the rosary will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Niswonger-Reynolds Chapel. After the funeral Mass Saturday, burial will be at Deschutes Memorial Gardens beside the grave of his wife, Maud A., who died Feb. 7, 1971.
